Belfast: Division and modernisation.

c.£12 per participant

No minimum number of participants though there may be limits depending on interest and associated transport options

A guided tour of the peace walls, murals, conflict and post-conflict spaces (3 hours).

This tour will examine the legacies of religious segregation in the city and the enduring effects of the peace walls that still divide Catholic and Protestant communities. The politicisation of territory and the marking of space are explored on the Falls-Shankill divide especially through wall murals, flags and graffiti. However, the visit will also look at social enterprises that address inner-city deprivation on a cross-community basis and which reflect alternative identities and related strategies of local development. The tour will evaluate attempts to modernise Belfast in the Cathedral Quarter and Titanic Quarter where university-led, heritage and cultural regeneration attempt to rebrand a more cosmopolitan and outward looking imagery for the city.
